Layers, Milan Design Week 2025

Layers enchants the Statale with an immersive experience
between nature and technology

An upside-down landscape, suspended between earth and sky, welcomed visitors to the University of Milan in an extraordinary sensory experience. Designed by architect Silvio De Ponte and created by Espositiva, Layers is an installation that subverts visual codes and invites visitors to immerse themselves in nature, light, matter and sound.

Created as part of the most important event of Milan Design Week 2025, CreAction, conceived by Interni – Mondadori, comes to life in the Cortile d’Onore of the University of Milan, one of the symbolic locations of the Fuori Salone.

Espositiva has given shape to this imaginary space with a spectacular installation that brings the design concept to life: a suspended structure houses an expanse of upside-down wheat ears, while on large monitors water seems to rise upwards, defying gravity.

A surprising visual effect, enriched by lights, sounds and scents – curated by Visioni Olfattive – envelop the visitor and accompany them on a delicate and immersive sensory experience. An environment that is not only to be looked at, but also to be walked through, listened to and breathed in.

Completing the installation, large LED screens create the illusion of water flowing upwards, while four resin volumes by Living Surfaces, with fragmented surfaces, interact with the historic columns of the portico, in a balance suspended between ancient and contemporary.

The project also saw the contribution of Infinitys by ACS Data for digital technologies, Now Edizioni for the graphic and material surfaces, and Idealverde for the wheat ears that complete the installation.

We have built not just a space, but an experience that combines nature and artifice, lightness and depth, redefining the boundaries between installation and architecture.
